Nelson sailors perform well at SI champs

The breeze freshened and the seas flattened for the second and final day of the South Island Laser Championships sailed of Nelson this weekend.
The final race of the Laser 4.7 saw Ben Whiteside (CYC) head home Daniel Smith (PPYC). The pair, who had been battling it out all series, both ended the with 6 points, with Ben taking the overall title. Nelson's Yacht Club's Holly McKee took third overall and first place in the womens section ahead of another local, Phillipa Wood.
In the Radials, the second race of the day sailed in the freshest conditons of the series, seemed to suit Ryan Amlehn as he powered his way to second place behind the race and overall winner George Lane (Murrays Bay). Ryan's second place finish secured second overall ahead of Peter Sise (Vauxall) in third place. Fourth place went to Declan Burn (QCYC), whom won three of the five races and had led the series early on but ruled himself out of contention of a top three finish with two OCS (Over Course Start) finishes. Nelson's Mat Vining's consistent series saw him take out the fifth spot from the sixteen strong fleet.
The standard class belonged to Alex Morris (MacAndrew Bay) whom had the series wrapped up after the fourth race with four straight victories. Behind him the fight for second and third was tight with Ravensbourne's Bruce Adam edging out out Peter Graham (NPCL) courtesy of a victory in the last race.
