The new season gets underway at Tahuna in ideal conditions: Wet
Tasman Rugby League's 2012 Smokefree Bin Inn Cup got off to a soggy start at the Tahunanui playing fields on Saturday, with three consecutive matches played in damp conditions.
Two-time defending champions Stoke Cobras got their campaign off to the perfect start, getting past the Wanderers Wolves 32-10.
The Wolves have picked up three players from Motueka who represented the Tasman Titans last season, and will only get stronger as the season progresses.
The Blenheim-based Wairau Taniwha held off the challenge of the Victory Vikings 34-26, the latter putting up a remarkable effort despite being short of numbers.
The most eye-catching result of the day went to the newly established Richmond Rabbits, who were far too strong for the Tahunanui Tigers.
They took the win 48-16.
Rhe next round sees Stoke take on Tahuna at Tahunanui, Wanderers host Victory in Brightwater, and Richmond travel to Blenheim to take on Wairau.
